In memory of Al Roberts

Probably most of our members never
knew Al Roberts. Those who did,
treasure him as a person, scholar,
leader, and friend. Al was very suc-cessful
in hosting the 2WCAH in At-lanta
in 1976. Al's great ability with
French solidified a strong relationship
with Ernest Stevelinck, the host of the
1st WCAH in Brussels in 1970.
My favorite memory of Al was his
decision, along with Elliott Slocum, to
move the Raverta Tax Library from
storage in Atlanta to Ole Miss to form
the Accounting Tax History Research
Center. Al and Elliott did the transfer
as quickly as possible to save us all
sorts of estate problems in Georgia.

Al Roberts was the second President
of the Academy and served for many
years as the Secretary. As such he
was the administrative backbone of
the organization for nearly two dec-ades.
When he retired in the late l990s, he
truly retired. I saw him only once or
twice since then and he seemed to
have enjoyed these ‘emeritus’ years
following his long service at Georgia
State and prior to that at Missouri. His
dissertation on Robert Montgomery
remains a biographical gem and his
contributions to the community of
accounting history will likely not be
surpassed.
He will be missed, and sorely so….
