My
dear
dear
Ma
,
Yours
of the
4th
inst
also a
box
filled
with
choice
eatables
was
duly
received
and a
port
of the
letter
was
discussed
last
night
by
myself
and
club
mates
who
thought
the
treat
was
capital
and
you
may
feel
sure
I
feel
proud
when
the
[encomiums]
of the
excellency
of the
viands
were
pronounced
on
every
side
by those
who
earnestly
did
justice
to them
even
the
careful
packing
of the
box
was
observed
and
received
its
share
of
[enuit]
in
[way]
praises
.
I
think
dear
Ma
the
greatest
credit
is
due
to
you
and
feel
very
grateful
for
your
kindness
in
so
effectually
gratifying
my
desire
for a
box
of
good
thing
.
Remember
me
kindly
to
my
coz
Anna
and
thank
her for the
part
she
took
in
getting
ready
of the
box
.
Well
you
may
imagine
my
surprise
on
hearing
of the
conduct
of
Lannier
, but
so
was the
world
. The
students
for the
last
few
days
have been
greatly
excited
on the
subject
of
spiritualism
and have been
breaking
the
tables
tell
some
marvelous
tales
.
I
commenced
this
scrawl
last
week
on
regular
writing
day
and not
finishing
it
then have not had the
time
since
for
accomplishing
it
and
therefore
embrace
the
short
interval
between
now
and
church
time
I
am
afraid
you
will be
disappointed
on the
mails
being
opened
not to
receive
the
weekly
letter
but the
heavy
rain
the
rail
road
bridges
have been
washed
away
in
several
places
both
above
and
below
Oxford
entirely
cutting
off
communication
with
other
places
.
I
am
studying
harder
now
than
I
have
since
I
entered
Col
&
get
up
at
5
oclock
in the
morning
and
go
to
bed
at
10
or
11
oclock
at
night
so
you
see
,
whether
I
succeed
or not
I
am
endeavoring
to
effect
success
. The
weather
is
splendid
Spring
with
all
its
lovliness
and
beauty
seems
to have
suddenly
burst
upon
us,
renewing
the
vigor
of
both
body
and
mind
, as
well
as
affording
an
excellent
opportunity
to those of us
who
study
Botany
to
perfect
ourselves
in that
branch
.
Ma
whenever
you
can
send
me
some
money
it
will be
acceptable
I
am
entirely
without
shoes
, the
boots
I
procured
in
Vicksburg
prove
to be
no
count
at
all
. With
love
to
all
. Also
respects
to any
friends
that
may
enquire
for
me
.
Your
affectionate
son
Fred
