My
dear
Ma
I
let
pass
my
regular
writing
being
in the
midst
of
Examination
&
c
: and have
just
now
taken
my
seat
to
drop
you
a
few
hurried
lines
merely
to
let
you
know
that
my
health
is
excellent
and
spirits
first
rate
.
I
have been
examined
on
two
studies
, as
well
as
I
am
able
to
judge
my
[stanard]
is
tolerably
good
, but
I
have
two
of
my
hardest
to
stand
yet
;
Mathematics
and
Botany
they will be
dispensed
this
[illegible
word]
however
, and for the
present
my
scholastic
duties
will
cease
.
I
would
start
home
Saturday
but
Tuesday
night
a
week
my
medal
is
to be
presented
to
me
, and
I
suppose
I
will be
compelled
to
stay
to the
ball
as
I
will
almost
be
obliged
to
purchase
a
ticket
,
therefore
I
might
as
well
remain
and
get
the
good
of
it
.
I
will
take
my
departure
for
home
on the
29
,
provided
I
get
the
[illegible
word]
in
time
,
which
I
doubt
not.
I
believe
I
told
you
I
would not be
able
to
come
part
of the
way
for
half
[illegible
word]
as
I
did
Christmas
.
Even
now
I
am
at a
loss
to
see
how
[Kress]
charged
me
so
much
, if the
first
bill
he
sent
you
was
$75.00
the
last
should have been
less
than
$50.00
for
I
sent
back
a
coat
valued
at
$35.00
and a
vest
at
$12.00
neither
of
which
I
had
ordered
I
retained
1
white
linen
suit
and a
think
black
coat
and
pair
of
pants
from their
looks
I
dont
think
Kress
should have
charged
so
much
you
may
think
I
speak
about
this a
little
more
than
is
necessary
Ma
but
it
worries
me
that the
old
Dutchman
should
act
in the
manner
he has.
I
have
written
in
haste
as
myself
,
like
others
are
busy
in
getting
ready
for the
next
Examination
.
Please
send
my
[illegible
word]
as
soon
convenient
.
I
feel
very
anxious
to
get
home
, and would not
fancy
being
delayed
.
Give
my
best
love
to
dear
Pa
with a
good
share
for
yourself
.
I
will
write
you
a
better
letter
the
latter
part
of the
week
.
Your
own
devoted
son
Fred
I
thought
I
should be a
little
more
explicit
in
asking
for
money
.
therefore
have
opened
my
letter
Please
send
$25.00
dollars
that
is
the
least
amount
I
can
get
through
on
send
it
so
as to
get
up
the
27th
or
28th
if
possible
.
F.R.B
.
