Pa
is
not here to
join
me
in
love
but
Ill
[serve]
as
you
will
hear
from him
yourself
.

My
darling
Alumnus
Your
two
letters
to
Pa
and
I
were
duly
recd
last
week
and
we
feel
happy
and
congratulate
you
upon
the
prospect
of the
sheep
skin
and
your
respectable
grade
in
scholarship
but
far
above
all
your
moral
standing
and
gentlemanly
deportment
gives
us
pleasure
and
happiness
. The
only
uneasiness
expressed
by
your
Pa
was in
regard
to
your
standing
higher
in
German
than in
French
as
I
believe
he has a
horror
of
anything
German
,
so
I
advise
you
to
speak
French
mostly
at
home-
especially
to
Pa
.
Dr
.
Waddell
replied
promptly
and
fully
to
your
Pas
letter
and in
kindest
terms
of
our
dear
boy
.
Pa
wished
to
write
to the
Dr
. any
way
explaining
that
business
matters
had
promoted
him from
visiting
the
university
&
c
feeling
that
it
really
looked
strange
that in the
3
years
he had not been
present
at any of
your
exs-
and
your
letter
[illegible
word]
him an
excuse
to
write
.
I
have not
sent
you
the
papers
because
Ive
no
stamps
will have
some
this
week
.
I
hope
I
am
making
you
some
fine
domestic
drawers
write
immediately
and
say
shall
I
send
them;
I
think
you
would
find
them
pleasant
for
[illegible
word]
cement
[ninie]
Goodrich
spent
Saturday
night
and
part
of
Sunday
last
with us.
Mr
.
G
.
&
Pilcher
took
breakfast
with us and
all
went
to
church
together
.
Last
Wednesday
we
bade
a
mite
on
[Wharf]
Boat
few
attended
but
it
was a
delightful
party
Lizzie
drove
down
to the
boat
left
her
contributions
and
returned
home
herself
and
mother
spent
part
of
next
day
with
me
.
It
appears
Liz
and
Annie
[Shelby]
feel
slighted
at
last
mite
and
Liz
concluded
she would not
attend
another
.
Weve
had
constant
company
for
some
time
but
I
suppose
the
hote
summer
will
prevent
much
more
I
have
so
little
strength
and
poor
servants
I
do
not
enjoy
anything
much
.
I
was
right
sick
the
last
letter
I
wrote
you
constant
fever
for
days
and
days
but have
missed
it
for a
week
and
feel
better
now
.
Do
be
very
careful
of
your
dear
self-
Cholera
is
in
Vicksburg
&
Memphis
and
cases
here
occasionally
.
Pat
McCormacs
wife
taken
sick
Friday
night
died
before
morning
any
excess
seemed
to
bring
it
on.
Great
many
complaining
in that
way
but
seem
able
to
check
it
by
taking
it
in
time
.
It
is
best
to be
prepared
with
medicine
and that
is
what
we
wish
you
to be
get
something
from
Dr
.
Isom
.
