Dear
Mother
As
pa
is
writing
I
have
concluded
to
write
you
a
few
lines
we
are
all
well
at
present
and in
fine
spirits
we
arrived
here
only
a
few
days
ago
We
thought
that
we
were
going
to have
something
to
do
but
I
doht
think
we
will have any
fighting
at this
place
anytime
soon
the
Yanks
are
thought
to be
leaving
here the
greater
part
of
our
troops
are
up
toward
Culpepper.
"
Lee
and
Longstreet
are
mernuvering
up
that
way
while
A.P
.
Hill
engages
them here
we
can
see
the
old
Yanks
plain
enough
from
our
Picket
line
but have
orders
not to
shoot
but
I
dont
guess
such
as this will
interest
you
"
We
had
seven
men
from
our
Company
to
desert
We
caught
three
of them There was
James
Trait
,
James
Colwell
&
James
D
.
Ivy
that
you
know
" the
others
are
Thomas
J
.
Cook
,
E
.
Brashier
,
Jacob
A.
Williams
,
Henry
Steel.
" The
three
first
were
caught
and
may
be
shot
for
all
I
know
but if they are
I
shall
be
sorry
for
them.
"
Ma
I
can
not
tell
when
I
will
get
home
if
ever
but
I
can
stay
&
do
my
duty
as
long
as the
lord
will
permit
me
to have
my
health
I
have been
blessed
so
far
with
good
health
&
I
thank
him for
it
Ma
I
will
close
trusting
that
you
will
pray
for
me
I
forgot
to
state
that
Stephen
Burton
was
dead
he
died
at
Petersburg
in the
hospittle
and
we
could
learn
nothing
of the
particulars
of his
death
.
Your
affectionate
son
, A.
H
.
Clark
.
Dear
Mother
,
I
will
write
you
a
few
lines
I
am
quite
well
at
present
We
have been
moving
about
so
much
that
I
have not
learned
to
write
well
enough
to
write
a
letter
yet
I
am
coming
home
before
long
as
soon
as
some
one
one
gets
a
furlow
Pa
wont
let
me
come
by
myself
I
expect
Pa
will
resign
and
come
home
too
this
summer
.
