Dear
Mother
"
I
have the
opertunety
to
send
you
a
few
lines
to
let
you
know
that
I
well
at this
time
and would be
glad
to
know
that
you
are
well
and in
good
health.
"
We
are
doing
very
well
at this
time
but
we
have been on
duty
ever
since
we
have been
here.
"
We
have been
guarding
Yankee
prisners
untill
yesterday
morning
We
was
relieved
for a
few
days
at this
time.
"
We
did
not
get
here in
time
to
get
in the
fight
and
I
expect
it
was a
very
good
thing
for
we
might
have been
killed.
" There has been
many
Yankees
taken
here at this
place
I
think
about
five
thousand
of them but
I
am
not
certain
of the
fact.
"
It
takes
about
six
hundred
of them to
make
any
show
here
among
so
many
some
thinks
there will
[som?]
but there
may
be
one
more
battle
at this
place.
"
Where
the
battle
was
fought
there was
many
kild.
"
I
staid
all
nigh(t)
with the
Magnolia
Guards
and
I
saw
all
the
boys
and
Bill
and
Mose
was
hurt
Mose
was not in the
fight
Tom
Goods
was not
hurt
but
some
of the
boys
was
wounded.
" These has been
so
many
wounded
that
we
are
getting
use
to
seeing
them and there has been
many
of
our
men
wounded
in in the
left
arm
many
of their
arms
cut
off.
"
We
are
getting
along
very
well
at this
time
but
I
do
not
know
how
long
that
we
may
be
so
as
we
ar
in the
largest
portion
of the
army
and
every
thing
is
getting
scarse.
"
Molasses
is
selling
for
five
dollars
a
gallon
and
every
thing
else
a
good
deal
the
same
way
and that
is
hard
for us but the
thing
that
I
buy
will be
scarse
for
I
do
not
believe
that
is
rite
and
I
intend
to
use
my
money
in a
better
way
but there has been
some
of
our
boys
has
spent
all
of their
money
for a
little
or
almost
nothing.
"
I
would be
glad
to
hear
from
you
soon
as
I
have not
heard
from there
since
I
have been
here.
"
I
would be
glad
to
hear
from
[Buford?]
all
of the
people
that
is
there.
"
Tell
Uncle
Bluford
Clark
that
I
want
him to
write
to
me
as
soon
as he
can
do
so
and
I
would be
glad
to
hear
from any of the
girls
as
I
have not
heard
from them
I
want
to
read
a
letter
from
Agness
to as
well
as the
rest
I
want
you
to
take
good
care
of
my
horse
for
I
may
be at
home
next
winter
and would be
glad
to
know
that to be the
case
we
may
all
come
back
to
Miss
before
long
for there
is
some
talk
of that and if that
is
the
case
I
will
get
to be
close
to
home.
"
We
have
seen
some
hard
times
but not
like
we
will
se
our
time
good
now
but how
long
it
will be
so
I
can
not
say.
"
I
heard
that the
Yankees
were at
Oxford
I
would
like
to
know
wheather
that
is
so
or not and if
it
is
so
I
would be
glad
to be there with them for
I
think
that
I
could
satisfile
some
of them as there has been
many
of them
badly
fooled
for they
thought
that they would be in
Ritchmond
Va
but they
failed
to
get
there and they
never
will
get
tere
I
do
not
think
I
would be
glad
from
S.J
.
Hudson
as
I
have not
heard
from
[?]
since
last
fall
I
want
to
hear
all
the
girls
that are in that
Country
so
I
must
come
to a
close
for this
time
.
I
want
you
to
write
as
soon
as
you
get
this. There has been
many
that would not
[."?]
answer
in
return
so
good
by for this
time
.
