I this moment seat myself by the fire
It being an unusually cool day for the last of May - by
way of acknowledging the script of your letter - dated
about the 1st of the present month and should have
done so long sense - but I have certainly borne quite an
affliction for weeks past in the way of (sorehands) - and

We received but a few days since a passing
call from your uncle John E. and Eliza Gage who
were making rather a flying visit to Mrs. Roberts
Yazoo City We found them in firm spirits and
made much inquiry of you - but on the heel
of their arrival in Yazoo City - Eliza was taken
violently with pneumonia - and serious fears entertained
on Saturday last when I left them of her recovery
Since then I have not been advised as to her situation
but do most cordially hope for her recovery speedity -
as they seem to be journeying through life quite agreeably.)
Your cousin Sam Roberts' health and prosperity
is far from being enviable - and do not wish to tax
