My dear Ma;"
I have forgotten how long it
has been since I wrote to you, but not near so "
long, I am sure as since you sent me a
letter. I have been really home sick for about
2 weeks, for the first time since I left. Some-
how I took up an idea that I wanted to see
you all again, and I cant help making
that I would be at home. Yet to the end of
my enlistment is not long-only four months,"
I cannot realize, either, that I have been
from home 8 months - that a crop has
been made and gathered, and that one year
of my life has passed without my seeing
cotton growing. By the way - what are you
doing with the cotton, have you had it packed
is it still in the Gin-house, and how much did
you make. Are you not having a mild
winter - even up here we have had no very cold
weather - all Christmas week was mild-beautiful
weather. The ice has not been more than an
inch thick at any time. On Christmas day
we had any quantity of Egg-nog, and I think
about half of the Regiment was drunk. They are
kept in good humor however, and we have
no fighting. Yesterday was New Year, and I did
not see a drop of spirits, nor had I any Egg-Nog."
