My dear Georgiana;)
Your letter of the 27th
was received this morning, and read with
more than usual interest because it
contained a great deal that was new to me -
You are all uneasy by this to know what
was my fate in the battles that have been
recently fought at this place. It has been
a week to day since the battle of the 31st
May in which I played a part, but it is
the very first time I have had an oppor-
tunity to write you a line, A friend of mine
named Bickham was slightly wounded &
went to the hospital, and I requested him to
write to Ma & tell her I was safe so far, and
tell her why I did not write, I have been
unable to get any paper before now, & we
have been So constantly moving that I had
not time to write. You will get his
letter before you do this I guess, but I thought
it have enough to write as I had the oppor-
tunity. I was in the battle of the 31st, but
came out safe. I had on my canteen
and haver-sack and a ball passed
through them both & through my coat
pocket, I had a newspaper: a New York
