My dear Ma;)
It has been some time
since I wrote to you and the cause
is this. Two weeks & two days ago we
recieved orders to cook 4 days ra-
tions & prepare for a march with
a pair of blankets only - I thought
we would not be out more than
a week and hence did
not put any paper in my pocket, The
first thing we knew we found our
selves in front of Suffolk, looking
the Guns of the Yankee fortifications
in the mouth, We go on picket
within from 2 to 500 yards of their
breast works, and can see their tents
and the whole town of Suffolk."
The first time our company went
on picket we had two boys wound
