Dear Sister Em"
I had expected upon my arrival in this place to have found a letter awaiting me from you or some of the home folks but was doomed to disappointment: found one however from Sarah North that had been forwarded from Washington and one from Addie Williams. she did not know of my marriage. Mr. [Lankston] said he opened the mail and not think who Mrs. R.E. Gerdine was that was some days before we reached here it sounds funny to myself and can hardly realize it yet. this is the first letter I have written except those notes to Lucy. the umbrella she received of course did she the jewelry also? we had it )
