A.L.S. December 13 [1863]. R.E. Gerdine [Roxana Chapin Gerdine] to Dear Sister Emily [Emily McKinstry Chapin]. 1p. With envelope.)
West Point Dec. 13th"
Dear Sister Emily-
Why do not some of you write me by Flag of Truce. other people receive letters. Miss Seaburys some of them come through but none from you all: Tom & Pet have been very sick with some throat disease. Tom is well now. Pat died the 17th of Oct. I have no likeness of her. I wish you would have the one I sent home copied for fear some accident may happen to that one and put them away carefully for me. She was the smartest, prettiest little thing I ever saw: Lucy & Pet, my two idols, are gone and I am perfectly indifferent now to every body almost. Mr. G says if I can get across the country in the spring I may take Tom & go home but it is a long time to look forward to. A month before she died I had her clothes & mine packed intending in company with another lady to go but the money we expected we could not get & Mr. J heard of her brothers death (in prison) whom she was going to see. So we gave up the trip. I w as going to leave Tom here. It is very difficult getting Greenbacks or Gold but by spring hope to get it. Write soon to your sister. R.E. Gerdine
