Dear Father I take the present opportunity to write you a few lines to let you know how we are getting along at the present the co has injoyed tolerably good health Benton has ben complaining for the last four or five Days James has ben gone from the a bout three Weekes we have heard from wonce or twist he was walking a bout Sum of the boys brought in news yesterday that he had got a sick furlow and had gone home )
Well Father I recon you wood like to heare somthing from the Battol of the Chickahomang near richmond it was a hard fought battol the battol begun a bout 10 oclock in the morning and continueed own till 6 in the evening the loss on boath sides was verry hevy we drove the enemy back at every point our brigade stood in line of battol all day long a weighting for orders to advance but we never receive them ountill the fight was nearly over )
thare was a yankee battery that our offisers wanted to take but failed to do it the brigade that the 11 Miss [belonged] was ordered to take the battery but the battery was supported
