Dear wife I write you to let you know that we are at this place and are well except [A] Irvinson his health is not good but I hope he will recover soon I have been very sick I had flux & fever when we were ordered to leave Winchester but would not let my officers know how sick I was knowing they would not let me come & when we began to march I got worst and gave out after going twenty miles but Hubert would not leave me & got us on a wagon where we rode to within three miles of the depot where we were to take the cars I do not think I was ever very worse off than when we arrived there he carried my gun and got a place for us to stayin & next day made arrangements for me to be carried to a house in the country & then reluctantly left me to hasten on to this place where a fight was expected he did everything for my comfort that lay in his power & I shall always remember him for his kindness to me. brother was left at Winchester not being able to march our regiment left me at Peidmont on Sunday morning & I hearing of the battle followed them the next morning hardly able to walk but I am well and doing well two of
