Dear wife according to my promise in my last I write you but if I had not made that promise I certainly would not write under existing circumstances we are expecting an attack every day in fact our enemies are about eight miles from this place with a strong force & are marching upon us with a front of about five miles we are perhaps going out to attack them as we have struck [our] tents and are preparing [four days rations] [we have been reinforced ] to about double the number we had at [bunker] hill some time ago when we marched out to meet them we may have a fight now or we may not one thing is certain we will fight unless they retreat they have had several little skirmishes with our cavalry and scattered them day before yesterday evening some came in without their hats and it is reported that two were killed and some wounded. they were completely routed the enemy surrounding them and firing on them
