Dear Wife I stated in my last that we were at this place and would Get in our camps the next day we are now in our tents and thought we were doing well but last night we received an order to get three days provisions ready & be ready to strike our tents at a moments warning to march to a place unknown to us privates I suppose we will go out to meet the enemy who are said to be slowly advancing toward us they now occupy all our former lines & are reported to be in ten miles of this place we are ready to receive them We have glorious news from Arkansas but bad from Newborn N,C, & Jacksonville Florida the enemy are gradually extending the line of their operations & by the first of May they will be ready to give us battle from every point of the compass I believe our officers have let the opportunity of terminating this war speedily pass & now our enemy have the advantage they will make good use of it & it will put us to our best to overthrow them now they are victorious we had the advantage last summer & instead of pressing it we lay idle here & have lost a good
