Camp Fisher Va March 6th /62 )
Dear Wife Again I write you to let you know I am well so are all my messmates we have sent all of our blankets off except what we can cary I do not know what we will do here it is quite likely that we will not move in some time I believe we are only waiting for an advance of the enemy we have been on half rations of bread for the last two weeks and will continue so til we leave here or the roads get better we have plenty of beef but nothing else we have to buy part of our bread at a very high price, I wrote you in my last that it was quite probable we would evacuate Monassas & all our lines here on the river but I now doubt whether we leave or not, I think that the order to move was issued to deceive the enemy & get them to land their troops across so we can get to fight them & if they cross we can soon whip them back for the county is such that an enemy could be deceived & surrounded at almost any point )
Our time will be out here in about 35 days & then we will haste home to meet those we love & after a short time return to the tented field to dwell for the war
