On the [army] return of
July 10th, in the column of remarks, opposite
Hardee’s corps, is written in pencil:"
10 officers and 2052 [then], prisoners of war, are
reported among the absent without leave. and in
the same [ ], opposite Hood’s corps, -238 of-
ficers and [4597] men, prisoners of war, are reported
among the absent without leave. Below this you
wrote, last winter, when this [return] was in your
[ ] = “ The officers and soldiers reported “ absent
without leave”, and who are “ prisoners of war” in-
clued all captured in the army in all previous
engagements, and some of who have hither to
been incorrectly reported as “ Absent with leave,”
or “Absent.” " Am I not right in believing that there
