Ever dearest Sallie, I am glad to inform you that I am still among the living, although I am not well, and haven't been since I wrote you before some two or three weeks ago at Knoxville. I am now at the Newsome Hospital here and have been for the last 10 days. I was quite sick when I came here, but am now getting well again - think I will be able to go to my regiment again in a few days. I came on here with the regiment from Knoxville last Saturday night was a week ago, and went on out to Bridgeport Sunday, but Monday when they went to leave there, I was not able to go with them, so I had to come back here to the hospital. I have had the diarrhea and a very bad cold ever since we got to Knoxville, and before I came here, I was taken with a severe pain in my side and breast - thought I was taking the pneumonia, but I am glad I got off without it, for the pneumonia goes very hard with the soldiers here. I saw one poor fellow die with it in this room night before last. I thought for a few days that perhaps the Dr. would give me a furlough and let me go home awhile and get well, but I asked him about it this morning, and he told me I could not get it, so I s'pose there is no chance for me to get home soon if ever. Yet I will not lose hopes altogether.
