Transcript
[The
top
of this
letter
was
torn
off
, but
evidently
it
was
written
the
last
of
February
or
first
of
March
,
1863]
-
write
to
you
this
morning
,
although
I
have but
little
hopes
of
getting
a
chance
of
mailing
my
letter
.
We
left
our
old
camp
at
Goldsboro
on the
16th
and
came
by the
cars
to this
place
arriving
here
yesterday
morning
. The
object
of
moving
us was to
reinforce
Gen
.
Pryor
who
has
command
of this
portion
of
our
army
. His
force
is
said
to be
some
7,000
able
men
.
Four
miles
from here on the
other
side
of a
stream
called
Blackwater
is
said
to be a
force
of
Yankees
25,000
strong
,
whom
we
have to
oppose
.
Gunboats
can
run
up
the
Blackwater
(torn
off)
-
open
box
cars
in the
rain
and
cold
.
It
seems
as if
we
are
always
moved
in the
worst
weather
that
comes
.
It
is
still
raining
a
cold
steady
rah
which
is
very
disagreehfiie
.
Thanks
to
energy
and
attention
of
our
officers
we
were
able
to
bring
all
our
baggage
and
tents
which
are
now
doing
us
excellent
service
in
protecting
us from the
cold
and
rain
.
I
hated
to
leave
North
Carolina
very
much
.
We
were
living
finely
there, with
plenty
to
eat
and
excellent
quarters
.
We
we
are also
treated
very
kindly
by the
citizens
.
More
so
than
we
ever
were in
Virginia
.
I
have not the
least
idea
how
long
we
will
stay
at this
place
,
probably
a
month
and
probably
not
another
day
. But
I
hope
we
will not
stay
here
long
, as
I
do
not
like
the
country
.
I
must
bring
my
letter
to a
close
.
You
must
excuse
this
poor
apology
for a
letter
as
circumstances
will not
admit
of a
better
one
.
Direct
your
letters
to
Ricjimmnd
. Be
sure
and
put
it
after
this
style
,
R
.
C
.
Bridges
,
Co
. A,
llth
Miss
.
Regt.
,
Davis
Brigade
.
Write
soon
.
I
will
write
again
first
chance
.
Yours
fraternally
,
R
.
