Mr
.
Bridges
,
I
have
wrote
some
letters
home
by
mail
, but
I
have an
opportunity
to
send
this by
hand
.
I
would
like
to
know
what
you
are
getting
down
there.
I
suppose
little
or
nothing
as
usual
.
Well
,
I
wish
this
battle
was
all
over
, and
I
could
give
you
the
well
known
watchword
, "
All
is
well
", but
I
can't
have that
pleasure
yet
.
My
part
of the
fight
closed
on the
12inst
. by
my
being
shot
through
the
right
arm
above
the
elbow
.
My
company
that
time
,
8
killed
and
10
wounded
.
I
will not
stop
here to
give
their
names
.
I
have
sadder
news
for
you
. Have
you
heard
from
Dick
.
I
heard
from
one
of
hi»
Regt
. on the
6th
that he was
wounded
but
did
not
say
how
bad
.
Since
I
arrived
here,
I
have
seen
one
of his
Regt
.
who
was
near
him
when
he was
struck
. From what he
says
,
Dick
was
mortally
wounded
. He was
shot
in the
hip
, the
ball
shattering
the
joint
. He was
sent
to
Orange
Court
House
, but
whether
he was
sent
from there or not
I
can't
learn
.
I
think
in
all
probability
he
is
there or
dead
,
more
likely
the
latter
.
I
think
it
would be
more
than
useless
for
you
to
make
a
trip
up
here
now
. The
tug
of
war
is
certainly
going
on
up
here
now
.
We
have had and are
still
having
bloody
work
. ,
We
have
whipped
Grant
off
two
battle
fields
, but
still
he
does
not
give
up
. He
seems
determined
to
lofse
all
or
take
Richmond
.
Our
troops
are in
elegant
spirits
and
flushed
with
victory
. If the
fate
of the
Confederacy
hanijs
on the
result
of this
battle,/
!
firmly
believe
it
does
,
we
are
safe
and
sure
as the
sun
will
rise
tomorrow
morning
.
My
arm
pains
, and
I
must
close
.
My
best
love
to
Priss
and
Bobby
.
Yours
truly
,
J
.
T
.
Alford
