Dear
Margery
"
I
take
this
opportunity
of
dropping
you
a
few
lines
to
give
you
some
idear
of
our
presant
health.
"
We
are
all
well
and
hope
thase
few
lines
will
find
you
enjoying
the
same
blessing
[.)?]
You
yesterday
which
was
dated
Dec
28th
which
gave
me
great
satisfaction
to her from
you
and the
children
,
it
would be the
gratest
satisfaction
to
me
to
see
you
and the
children
But
you
may
be
sure
that
I
will
come
home
as
soon
as
I
can.
"
I
tried
to
get
a
furlough
before
Christmas
but
I
failed
on
account
of the
prespect
of a
fight
then at
Fredericksberg
and as
soon
as that was
over
we
was
ordered
down
here and
we
are
expecting
a
fight
her
every
day
But
we
do
not
now
when
it
will
come
or
it
may
not
take
place
at
all
and
I
hope
that
it
may
not But if
we
have a
fight
I
expect
to be in
it
I
will not have a
chance
to
come
home
untill
times
changes
for
now
man
will be
allowed
to
leave
this
part
of the
army
while
there
is
a
fight
expected
sow
I
cant
say
when
I
will
git
come
home
but the
first
chance
that
offers
I
intend
to
try
a
gain
sow
glad
to her that
you
got
your
Ring
for
I
was
afeard
that
it
would
never
reach
you
"
I
want
you
to have
it
for
my
sake
untill
I
come
You
stated
that the
Yankees
got
the
sorrel
horse
but
you
did
not
say
whether
they
got
anything
else
from
you
.
I
understood
that they
left
another
horse
in his
place
but
you
did
not
say
anything
about
it.)
I
also
understood
that
Isaac
had
volunteered
in the
Cavalry
and was
gowing
off
.
I
want
you
to
try
and
keep
him at
home
if
you
can
untill
I
come
home
and
I
want
you
to
wright
to
me
all
about
your
hogs
and how
much
Pork
you
have
put
up
and how
you
have
made
out
for
salt
and
wright
all
about
every
thing
conserning
the
stock
and how
you
are
making
out
this
winter
.
Direct
your
next
letters
to
Goldsboro
,
N.C
. for
I
expect
we
will be her for
some
time.
"
Wright
whether
you
got
pay
from
Sappington
or not and
whether
he
wants
to
stay
on
my
place
next
year
or
not.
" If he
does
he
must
pay
3
dollars
an
acre
for the
land
for
I
would
rather
let
it
ly
out
that to
rent
it
for
less
or
one
third
of the
crop.
" But
I
think
that
I
will
sertainly
get
to
come
home
between
this and
spring
.
I
want
Isaac
to
try
and
make
a
corn
crop
at the
mill
you
had
better
let
him
prepare
the
field
at the
mill
for that
purpose
.
Give
me
all
the
news
you
can
in
your
next
letter
and
wright
to
me
as
soon
as
you
git
this
letter.
"
Give
my
best
Respects
to
all
my
Friends
and
particular
to
Esq
.
Hunter
and
family
and
tell
the
Esq
. to
wright
to
me
for
I
have
never
got
a
letter
from him
since
I
have been in the
army.
"
Do
not
forget
me
and the
boys
when
you
gow
to the
secret
grove
[?]
for
you
may
affect
much
in that
way.)
Tell
the
children
to be
good
children
and
teach
them to
love
God.
"
Oh
you
dont
now
how
bad
I
want
to
see
my
little
ones
and her them
talk
.
Kiss
them for
me
and
tell
Saml
. to
kiss
you
for
me
and
remember
that
I
think
of
you
and them
often
in
my
lonely
hours
and
after
I
retire
for the
night.
"
Sow
farewell
for the
presant
But
I
hope
not
forever
put
your
whole
trust
in
God
I
remain
you
husband
untill
Death
