Dear
Wife
"
I
embrace
the
presant
opportunity
of
writing
you
a
few
lines
to
inform
you
of
our
presant
state
of
health
.
We
are
all
well
and have
bin
ever
since
we
left
home
.
We
landed
here on the
19th
and have
suffered
very
much
with
cold
since
we
have been
here.
"
We
in
camp
on a
hill
side
about
one
mile
from the
river
where
the
wind
blows
sow
cold
that
we
can
scarsly
keep
from
freezing
around
the
fier
.
We
are
sitting
around
the
fire
and
our
men
are
complaning
very
much
of the
cold
while
I
am
writing
I
am
sitting
on a
camp
stool
with
my
feet
on the
wood
and the
wind
blowing
sow
cold
that
scarsly
can
writ
attall
sow
you
must
not
think
hard
of
my
not
writing
more
for
I
have
just
herd
that
uncle
Henry
)
Tutan
was
agowing
to
start
home
and
I
have but a
short
time
to
write.
"
We
are
expecting
a
Battle
any
day
but there
is
no
sertainty
of
it
I
would be
glad
how
soon
sow
that
we
could
gitt
away
from this
cold
country
for if
it
gits
much
colder
here
it
will be
very
hard
on
our
men
. The
ground
is
frozen
very
hard
and
ice
aplenty
and
it
snowed
a
little
yesterday
evening
and this
morning
it
is
still
cloudy
and the
prospects
favorable
for
bad
weather
, the
women
and
children
are
all
gone
from
Collumbus
and the
whole
town
and
all
the
woods
round
for a
mile
and a
half
is
covered
with
soldiers
.
I
supose
that there
is
fifty
thousand
but
it
is
guess
work
as to the
number
for a
man
can't
git
anything
certain
as to the
number
but the
whole
country
is
alive
with them and if
I
had to
guess
as to the
prospect
of a
fight
I
should
say
that
I
think
it
is
very
uncertain
for
I
do
not
believe
that the
north
will
attack
sow
large
a
force
in
thare
fortifications
sow
nothing
more
at
presant
it
is
sow
cold
that
I
can't
think
of
anything
I
want
to
write
about
sow
farewell
for the
presant
and as
soon
as
it
gits
a
little
warmer
I
will
write
again.
"
Do
write
to
me
as
soon
as
you
git
this for
I
have
never
recd
a
single
line
from
you
since
I
left
home.
