Dear
Margery
I
embrace
the
presant
oppertunity
of
Dropping
you
these
few
lines
to
let
you
know
how
we
are
getting
along
we
are
all
well
and
hope
these
few
lines
may
find
you
all
well
.
We
have
[?]
returned
from
Suffolk
a
few
days
ago
whare
I
found
the
boys
when
I
got
back
to them they was on
picket
at
Suffolk
and had been for
several
days.)
I
got
to them on the
Sunday
weak
after
I
left
home,)
they had
Driven
the
Yankees
in to their
fortifycations
at
Suffolk
and
[mended/hemmed]
them in for
about
three
weaks
and had
picket
fighting
more
or
less
every
day
thare
was
one
nan
slightly
wounded
in
my
company
his
name
was
Robbins
a
son
of
old
John
Robbins
below
Banner
slightly
wounded
in the
knee
and was
sent
to the
hospittal
in
Petersbutg
have not
heard
from him
We
left
Suffolk
last
Sunday
was a
weak
we
marched
3
days
and
2
nights
strait
and
without
resting
but
very
little
which
used
the
Boys
up
pretty
bad
blistered
up
their
feet
very
bad
but they are
getting
all
right
again.
"
We
have but
little
to
do
whare
we
are
now
but
we
are
fortifying
our
position
very
strong
on the
Black
Watter
but
I
do
not
think
that the
enemy
will
ever
come
out
and
fight
us for
I
think
that
we
pretty
well
satisfied
them
while
we
was on
picket
at
Suffolk
for
our
Boys
kiled
and
wounded
a
good
many
of them but the
number
could
not be
asertained
but the
Boys
in the
11th
Miss
Regt
met
and
talked
with a
Compny
of the
Yanks
by
agreement
between
the
officers
of the
two
Companys
and they
told
them that the
boys
of the
forty
second
with their
long
range
guns
had
killed
and
wounded
a
good
many
of their
men
and they
wanted
to
make
an
agreement
with them for
our
Brigade
and
thers
not to
shoot
at
each
other
any
more
but the
next
day
we
was
ordered
away
from
thare.
"
Our
Boy(s)
would
shoot
at them
when
ever
they
could
see
one
poke
his
head
above
the
Breast
works
and they
soon
found
when
the
42nd
was on
picket
and would
keep
them
selves
very
close
in their
quarters
.
We
are
now
about
fifteen
miles
further
up
the
Blk
.
Water
River
than
we
was
when
I
was at
home
but
do
not
now
how
long
we
will
stay
her.

Our

whare
you
must
mail
your
letters
for the
presant.)
the
big
fight
has
come
off
Fredericksberg
and
resulted
in a
Glorious
victory
on
our
side
fighting
Jo
Hooker
has
very
Badly
whiped
the
Yankees
loss
in
kild
and
wounded

set
down
at
25
thousand
while
ours
is
not

I
wonder
who
they will
put
up
in
Hooker's
place
now
.
Barksdale's
Brigade
suffered
very
bad
in the
fight
but
I
have not here any
perticulars
as to the
loss
in that
Brigade
I
would
like
to her from the
17
Regt
but have not
herd
anything
reliable
.
Give
my
love
to
all
my
friends
tell

and
par
not to
think
hard
of
me
for
coming
away
as
I
did
for
I
could
not
bear
to
tell
them
farewell.
" But
I
hope
