John W. Queenan
Acclaimed by
American Institute of CPAs
The highest honor the accounting profession
in the United States can bestow
has been granted to John W. Queenan,
the Firm's managing partner. The
American Institute's CPA Gold Medal
Award for Distinguished Service was
presented to Mr. Queenan in a ceremony
on October 14th at the AICPA
annual meeting in Washington, D.C.
Mr. Queenan was cited as "a man
whose commitment to his chosen profession
is reflected not only in the
standards of excellence of the great firm
he heads, but in his unceasing efforts to
improve the art of accounting." The
citation mentioned specifically his service
to the Institute as president in 1961-
62, his efforts on behalf of the Accounting
Principles Board, and the statesmanship
and tact with which in the
mid-1950s he helped to resolve areas
of confusion between the professions
of law and accountancy.
The medal was awarded "for all his
accomplishments and qualities, enlivened
as they are by a conviction
that the profession of accountancy has
a profound influence on the world we
live in."
Mr. Queenan was chosen for the
honor by an Institute committee guided
by the criteria that the award shall be
made to "a member whose influence on
the profession as a whole is distinguished
when compared with other
contemporary leaders." There have
been several years since the award was
established twenty-five years ago when
the committee did not consider anyone
worthy of the honor.
Originally called the American Institute
Award, for the first ten years it
was usually granted to two members,
one who had rendered outstanding
service, and the other who had contributed
significantly to accounting literature.
Subsequently it has not been
usual to select more than one recipient
a year. In 1958 a medal was designed
to accompany the award, and the name
was changed to CPA Gold Medal
Award for Distinguished Service.
Mr. Queenan joins five other Has-kins
& Sells partners chosen for the
award over the years: the late General
Arthur H. Carter (1946), the late Edward
A. Kracke (1948), N. Loyall
McLaren (1948), Arthur B. Foye
(1957) and Jay A. Phillips (1961).
With Mr. Queenan's selection, no other
accounting firm has so many award
winners among its members. •
