Two DH&S accountants, Karen M.
Law McDowell of our Detroit office and
George W. Saunders of Los Angeles,
were named by the American Institute of
CPAs as recipients of the Elijah Watt Sells
certificate of high distinction for their out­standing
performance on the Uniform CPA
Examination held last May.
They were among 74 accountants who
achieved grades high enough to be hon­ored
by the Institute. A total of 49,791
candidates, including 331 from DH&S, sat
for the exam.
Also recognized by the North Carolina As­sociation
of CPAs for his excellent per­formance
on the examination was
T. Vernon IMewlin, Jr. of our Greensboro
office. He received the silver medal for
earning the second highest grade in the
state.
Karen, also a William A. Paton Award win­ner
for scoring the highest grades in the
state of Michigan, joined our Detroit office
shortly after receiving her BBA degree
from the University of Michigan in April. In
recognition of her outstanding average,
she was named a James B. Angell scholar
and was the 1977 recipient of the Arthur
H. Carter scholarship. Her extracurricular
activities included treasurer of the Mortar
Board National Senior Honor Society and a
member of Beta Alpha Psi and Beta
Gamma Sigma. Karen was also a member
of a pop vocal ensemble sponsored by the
university's alumni association.
George interned in our Los Angeles office
in the summer of 1977. He joined our firm
after his graduation from the University of
Southern California. George, a magna cum
laude graduate, received his BS degree in
business administration. He was a
member of Phi Kappa Phi, the all-university
honorary fraternity, Beta Alpha Psi and
Beta Gamma Sigma.
Vernon received a BS degree in accounting
from the University of North Carolina at
Chapel Hill. He joined our Greensboro of­fice
shortly after graduation in 1978. While
in school, he was a member of Beta Alpha
Psi and Beta Gamma Sigma.
