Haley Barbour served as chair of the Republican National Committee from 1993 to 1997 and governor of Mississippi from 2004 to 2012. Before holding office, Barbour was a lobbyist and one of the founders of the Washington lobbying firm BGR Group.
Digital Collection Information
The digital collection contains 183 recordings of GOP-TV television programs produced during his tenure as chair of the Republican National Committee. These include 150 episodes of the weekly program “Rising Tide” hosted by Barbour with Republican politicians, pollsters, consultants, strategists, and others discussing contemporary issues. During the 1996 Republican National Convention, GOP-TV also produced three shows: “GOP-TV@ Sunrise” provided daily previews and highlights of the convention; “GOP-TV’s Unconventional Convention Coverage” offered commentaries, features, and interviews with convention participants; and the “Republican National Convention in San Diego” offered gavel-to-gavel coverage of the official proceedings.
The Republican National Committee holds the copyright to the GOP-TV recordings, but has graciously permitted the University of Mississippi to make the digital files available to the public.
While recordings alone comprise this digital collection, the Haley Barbour Collection itself contains additional files and material. For other politically-related holdings at the Archives & Special Collections, see the Politics & Government Subject Guide.
