This collection consists of oral histories regarding music in north Mississippi, with particular emphasis on gospel music.
The American Music Archive at the University of Mississippi sponsored the Library of Congress' Field School for Cultural Documentation program from 2007 - 2010. These field school programs at the University of Mississippi focused on teaching participants how to properly collect oral histories, interview subjects, operate audio recording equipment, and create audio logs. Library of Congress members Michael Taft, David Taylor, and Guha Shanker, along with David Wharton from the Center for the Study of Southern Culture at the University of Mississippi, ran the program. Student participants were from Southern Studies, music, and history.
